About Dr Marc Briggs
Marc is a Senior Lecturer within the Department of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation at Northumbria University. He serves as the Programme Leader and contributes to teaching at both degree and masters levels.
Marc's primary teaching and research interests lie within Sport and Exercise Nutrition. Having graduated with a first-class degree in Applied Sport Science and Coaching (BSc Hons) from Northumbria University, he further pursued his studies and earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Sport and Exercise Nutrition.
During his doctoral research, Marc focused on investigating the Dietary Habits of Adolescent Academy Football Players. Collaborating with Sunderland AFC Academy, he employed innovative methods to assess energy balance, uncovering evidence of sub-optimal energy consumption. His research led to the development of intervention strategies aimed at enhancing nutritional intake among this elite population.
Marc is not only an academic but also an applied practitioner. He currently serves as the Sport Nutritionist for Academy footballers at Sunderland AFC, providing consultancy support. Additionally, he collaborates closely with other professional football clubs such as Newcastle United and Middlesbrough FC. His roles include performance analysis, talent identification, training load monitoring, and assessing match-play demands.
Beyond the borders, Marc has extended his expertise to international contexts. He traveled to Zambia, where he delivered specific nutrition sessions to the head Olympic team coaches at the Youth Olympic Development Centre in Lusaka.
Presently, Marc is providing nutritional support to the England Taekwondo squad in preparation for this year's World Championships.
