From 5 Years Out to Pro Contract: A Goalkeeper’s Path Back

28 years old. Back in the game.

Henrik has been following us since almost day one, from afar. He bought our very first pair of handling gloves (this means A LOT to us) and every model since. This speaks volumes because it means he fully believes in what we are doing.

After a consultation in early 2025, he decided to come over and work with us.

After the first session, you could tell straight away he was good.

But the obvious question was:

“How is he not playing professionally? How's he never been at a very good level!?"

195cm tall. An amazing athlete. Calm. Both footed. Top handling.

The reality:

  • 28 years old
  • years out of the game, a gap in his CV
  • hadn’t played loads of games
  • long layoffs through injury
  • surgery
  • recovery
  • Covid

And at 28, the perception starts to work against you.

We know how football works.

Where you’ve been changes perception.

Not your ability.

Where you’ve been.

It wasn’t that he wasn’t good enough.

It’s that if you are a certain age and not already somewhere, the assumption becomes:

“If he was that good, someone would have signed him by now.”

But his CV is what changes minds. And that’s the problem.

It’s a huge issue in football.

One we see every day working with goalkeepers who have slipped through the net.

We’ve seen elite. We’ve seen top prospects. We know the level.

That’s why we fight for these lads. We can see it in players. And also because too few people inside clubs are willing to do the same.

If nothing changes, nothing changes.

On paper, it doesn’t look like a goalkeeper ready to step into the professional game.

During that gap, he worked with top S&C coaches and physios to become the best athlete he could be.

Over the last year with us, we focused on helping him become the best goalkeeper he could be.

That’s all we promised.

But the more we worked with him, the more obvious it became.

He could play professionally. But not just be a pro. He could play at a very, very good level too.

So we started building proper evidence of his level.

Every session was filmed for analysis and feedback.

But we needed match clips. Proof in real game situations.

He:

  • played a friendly for a National League club
  • played two more in Northern Ireland
  • went to Germany to play semi-pro for two months

All to build undeniable proof of his level.

Training clips. Match clips. A complete picture of his game.

Proof that despite a lengthy layoff, he was more than ready to perform.

Because ability means nothing if no one can see it.

He generated real interest once clubs saw him train and play.

But even then, he faced knockbacks.

Too old.

Too much time out.

This is where his mentality showed. He has worked on his mindset. He's also matured. He's not daft, he understands the game. He understands the challenges that came along the way.

But it doesn't make it easy. It can be so tough putting the work in week after week with no opportunity coming.

He persevered.

A couple of very close calls. Opportunities that nearly happened.

But things out of his control kept getting in the way.

Most of our contacts were in the UK, but visa restrictions meant those opportunities couldn’t happen.

Still no breakthrough.

Every setback making the journey harder.

Sometimes it’s easier not knowing how close you were.

When doors keep closing, you start wondering what it’s going to take just to get a chance.

The breakthrough finally came two months ago.

After speaking with a forward-thinking GK coach who was looking for a goalkeeper, the door finally opened.

He was invited over.

Had a short, successful trial.

And signed.

Now he’s back in the professional game.

In his hometown too.

Vancouver FC have signed a goalkeeper with the potential to be a top, top goalkeeper.
